Christmas BREAK!
Rest! I am so psyched you all have been enjoying this journey with me but it is now time for me to take a little rest as we head into Christmas. I recommend you do the same. I am not sure what you do for a living or if you even have an opportunity to take a break but if there is any way to break from work and all of the social media distractions, PLEASE DO!
This world we live in is all about distraction. Every marketer out there is trying to distract you from the other distractions that you are already distracted by. Most of you are probably way ahead of me in this but here is an idea that I am working on with my family and it is GREAT!
TECH-FREE ZONE! That’s right! Set up a tech-free zone for you and your family. For us, it is my house. When I get home I turn my phone to airplane mode and plug it into the charger. Same goes for my wife. It's like going all the way back in time to like 6 years ago. Haha, I can’t believe how dependent I have become on touchscreen rectangles. If you can’t do a whole zone then do a tech-free hour. Maybe the first hour you are home from work or the last hour before bed? Either way, I honestly believe it is imperative to our actual happiness to break away from all of this and focus on our friends, family and ourselves. If you need help with what to do without your digital leash here are a few ideas. Talk to someone over coffee or a drink, hug your spouse or kids or dogs or stranger (be careful with that last one), read a book, pray, study the bible, email me and ask me why I am so ridiculous. On that last one, please do! I AM ridiculous. I know I am not the first to say this and I am definitely NOT the best at sticking to this rule. My kids catch me all the time and yell at me. “DAD, TECH FREE!!!”
The thing about these adjustments and improvements that we try to make, whether its tech-free hour or more exercise, you don’t have to be perfect. Just because you text or tweet in the “no-fly zone” or skip a day or two of your new work out plan doesn’t mean you need to abandon ship. Just put the rectangle down or pick the weight back up. You are the author of your own life and you can start over anytime. In fact, I might suggest that you do skip a day or write a Facebook post and then start over. That way you can see that the Gestapo (unless you live with my kids) won’t come down on you and that you can just start over or pick back up.
Life isn’t about being perfect. We all know that is impossible despite our best efforts. We can pretend online but that sucks too. That is part of why I am doing this journey online and out loud. I think more people need to admit that they suck at something and screw up at a lot! I am here to say that I am the worlds largest screwup but I am trying to get better every day. And the thing that has helped me over this last year is to not be perfect with my goals and resolutions. I am going to go into goals and resolutions more after Christmas and I am going to ask if any of you want to join me for 2018 and try to make it the best year ever! But enough for now. I am going to take a few days off and rejoice in my wonderful family and the birth of my Lord and Savior!
Merry Christmas everyone!!!
If you are at all interested in joining me in trying to make 2018 the best year ever then shoot me a message at morgan@highland-cycles.com I don't know exactly what it's going to look like but it will be FREE and fun!
